In 1934, a small town in the Murmansk region Khibinsk was renamed Kirovsk. It is located at the foot of the Kukisvumchorr mountain range. Today there is a developing ski resort Big Vudyavr. The city itself is located at an altitude of 368 m above sea level. This is the southern outskirts of the Khibiny mountain range, consisting of the Aikuayvenchorr mountains (the southern and northern slopes are involved) and Kukisvumchorr (the southern slope). Skiers choose hotels near their favorite skiing spot. The season lasts from mid-November to mid-May.

In the city there is the northernmost female Orthodox monastery – Khibynogorsk. The sisters settled here in 2005.
