Although evidence shows humans have been present in the region for thousands of years, the first long-lasting settlements date back to the Middle Age. For a long period, the destiny of the village was attached to the influence of the Interlaken Abbey, until the times of the Protestant Reformation.
Tourist activity begun in the 18th century, bringing new life and wealth to the village. During the second half of the 19th century, roads and railway lines were developed, allowing a constant influx of visitors. Beautiful place, even just by stepping outside the room you'll be surround by beautiful snowy mountains. There is sufficient eateries, shops and supermarkets to cater to visitor needs. Getting around is breezy as there is frequent bus during the day. At night you could just walk around as the area is not too large. Getting into and out of Grindelwald is convenient via train. Before visiting Grindelwald I had only seen pictures of it in Spring and Summer so I was a bit apprehensive when I booked but it far exceeded our expectations. Its a wonderful place to stay in and we could've stayed here much longer.

I adored my hotel and the spectacular views.
I adored my hotel and the spectacular views. The First slopes were great and relaxing, the snow conditions amazing. One off-putting aspect was that there was a crazy traffic jam on the last 5-10km to Grindelwald on my way up there, and the same thing on the way home.

I always hesitate to sing Grindelwald’s many praises because I don’t want the secret to get out and for it to be overrun. However, each year that I return sees more and more visitors, so I suppose it’s not a secret anymore. For hiking, relaxing, and other activities, this is my heaven on earth. It is a special rural place with warm and friendly people, surrounded by sky scraping peaks that have you constantly bewildered by the landscape around you. It feels like coming home each time I visit, and I highly recommend it as a place to recharge your batteries and revel in the splendor of Earth’s beauty.

The information provided 15 minutes walk from the station is incorrect. The property is up on the hills, if you travel with suitcase you will push for an hour to get to the property. Their is a bus 112 from the train station and stop outside the hostel but we were not told when asked how to get to the hostel, the respond was bus or taxi without advising bus number. We and other travellers pushed our large suitcase for an hour uphill, was terrible experience. When arrive at the hostel, very rude receptionist greet us with un zipped. The common and breakfast area was nice but the room and linen were terrible, I have not stated in a poor service hostel like this one.

Excellent location to make your base for touring the Jungfrau region. Good mix of shops/restaurants and nature/sightseeing. You have the option of staying in town or more peace and quite at outer edges. Access to a lot of activities including skiing, paragliding, etc. Wish we could have stayed longer.
Con would be, area is very touristy and a bit expensive.
Location was perfect, in a quiet space that was a short walk from the center of Grindelwald. Staff were extremely friendly, we had a large room with a great view! We did not use the spa facilities, but imagine that would be a great addition to the stay. Breakfast was nice with a lot of various options for different diets. We stayed here the night before a local race, and the hotel started breakfast 1.5 hours earlier to accomodate the racers, which was very nice. Parking was free, rooms were large with plenty of storage space.
First off, the view from my 5th floor to the Eiger and Jungfrau mountains. This was the main reason why I came to Switzerland. On arrival from the train at Grindelwald I was met by Sybill on reception. Very nice person with a sense of humor. Downstairs is the restaurant where I ate for 3 days and nights. Good food. On the first floor Breakfast is served. Led by Stephen and Simon. Thanks for the laughs and advice. The pictures I am sharing tell the reason why this hotel should be the place to stay.
Love this place so much! The rooms are extra large and special, and the mountains are just outside the balcony! The view is picturesque. The house is over 120 years old and it was a pleasure to stay here, Gery and michel were exceptionally nice! The hotel breakfast was rich and delicious, and you can also buy tickets for excursions to the Jungfrau directly here. Thanks also to Gery for driving to the train station to pick us up. All in all, fell in love with Grindelwald because of this hotel!
We absolutely loved this hotel. We got a room with a great view. The room itself was super functional. The small kitchenette that was hidden away was an absolute delight to be shown. We had completely missed it! The breakfast was great and it was so cool to get coffee whenever we wanted.
It is super easy to reach. We went by shuttle which was fairly easy to book. We also received cards for free public transport within Grindelwald so it was also super easy to reach by bus!
We notify the hotel that we are only able to check in after 8pm. They prepared and envelope with our name with the keys and guest cards. The staff even stayed back to ensure that we receive the check in instructions. The hotel is right beside the Grindelwald Firstbahn cable lift which brings one up to Grindelwald First. About 10 minutes walk from Grindelwald Train station. The view outside the hotel was great.
Everything.
Room (big), facilities (clean and plentiful), staff (friendly and helpful), location (6 mins from the Grindelwald station)
Breakfast was amazing
The hotel restaurant has a 10% discount for guests
They also provide a guest pass for you to use the buses and facilities (like swimming pool) at the sports center (4 mins walk) for free.
Good location, only one bus stop away from the main train station. The bus stop is right in front of the hotel. Easy access to the Grindelwald terminal (the terminal for the gondola of the Eiger express) and also close to the cable car for Grindelwald First station. Our room had a very good view over looking the mountain.
Amazing breakfast with juicer complimentary. Perfect and walkable location in between Grindelwald First and Grindelwald station. We traveled with a backpack only for 1 night. Quiet and lovely staff. Was nice to have a desk and comfy chair. Great storage and spacious cozy balcony. Would stay again! Thanks Hirschel hotel!
The location is very excellent in the center of Grindelwald, and the apartment is very suitable for families and very safe. No one can enter and exit except with a private key for residents only. There is a private car park for each resident and it is very safe. The check in and check out done by Glacier Hotel.
everything! 😊
1. location is perfect! - near train station, few steps away from the Grindelwald First terminal, restaurants all over the place.
2. the room itself - very homey with complete kitchen needs, the beds are very comfortable to rest in,
3. the view - perfect!
A family run luxury hotel is the best of both worlds. The team quickly resolved a booking error (my bad), and the hospitality, both the main restaurant and the bar, was top notch. Highly recommend for some recovery after outdoor adventures.
Breakfast was excellent every morning. The hotel is perfectly located in the town and the views from our room was Amazingly Breathtaking!! If we ever go back to Grindelwald we will definitely stay at Sun Star again!!
Old but comfy hotel in the amazing Grindelwald valley. Incredible views from our room window of the Alps and a great range of breakfast options. Great place to stay and take in the natural sights.
Room was far beyond our expectations for this price.
The position of the hotel is fantastic, offering what is probably the single best view in all of Grindelwald.
